Sorry to tell you, but they are not barges alongside, they are her hatch lids, (pontoons).
It is mormal for these heavylift ships to put these in the water and so get them out of the way of cargo operations.
The grey items on deck are her tweendecks.

No the pontoons very definately do not act as counterweights. Nothing floating is a counterweight. The yellow structure is similar to a pontoon but again it is not a counterweight.
Sorri I can't give you all the answers but If you look in corrspondence I am going to ask some questions of the professionals amongst us that may answer all our questions.

Read on their site that this design was made to heslp carry items that may not fit in the hold. Accomodations being on one side, it leaves more room to carry onger items on deck. Cjeck out their site. Pretty informative. Type Jumbo on GOOGLE
