Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it a ship? No it's actually the French-built SEDAM N500 Hovercraft that ran for a short period (or more likely did not run) alongside the much more successful SRN-4 British designed and built Hovercraft. I was lucky to catch it in service on a sunny day at Dover on 27 July 1979. the French had no diffidence in naming it after the designer. Christopher Cockerell, the British designer, never got an SRN-4 named after him.

There actually was an SR.N4 named 'Sir Christopher' in honour of Sir Christopher Cockerell.
