Photographer:Hubert Desgagnés [View profile]Title:M.P. EMILIEAdded:Sep 25, 2007
Photo Category: Steam Ships (Operating and Preserved)
This wooden cargo schooner (130') was built as M.P.EMILIE despite the name "L'ACCALMIE" painted on her bow by the artist who purchased the boat after she was laid up in Baie Saint Paul, Charlevoix (100km east of Québec City, on the North Shore.
She was one of the finest and biggest wooden schooner designed by the master carpenter Paul Mailloux when he was only 19 years old! She was build in Ile aux Coudres in 1957 and had a gross tonnage of 270 tons. One typical aspect of these schooners was their flat botton. It may not sound good in bad weather in open sea but it was ideal when docking in small ports on the St Lawrence river where the tidal effect (up to 19 feet/5 meters in some locations) may create a problem. :-)
She has been sitting near the Baie St Paul's wharf for the last 25 years but the remains will not support many more years. pic taken in a nice winter late aftenoon. March 2004.

Very beautiful atmospheric view taken right after sunst I presume.
Even though she is falling apart, she hasn't changed much since I saw her also as l'ACCALMIE back in 1981.

Remarkable composition my friend.
