From a scanned slide taken while I was on the Tanker MOBILGAS transiting the Panama Canal to Puerto Armuelles, about May 1981. Just to the right you can see the stern of the towing tug "Nippon Maru" getting her ready for her journey.

That's great Paul! I presented these shots of CRISTOFORO COLOMBO to some ocean liner "experts" over on the LinersList discussion group on Yahoogroups. They generated quite some discussion! The thing is, this ship's trip to the breakers went in stages (she had a stay of execution so to speak). Your pictures show the first stage (Venezuela to Kaohsiung), which took place between March 12 and June 30, 1981. The actual Panama transit was on May 9, 1981. Once the ship arrived in Kaohsiung, she actually carried on to Hong Kong (after almost a year at Kaohsiung), was laid up there, only to return to Kaohsiung for actual scrapping on July 23, 1983!.

Thanks for the info. Ralph, especially as I can now pin piont the date we went through the canal! After nearly thirty years things get a bit foggy.
