The vessel lasted till 2004, when she went for scrap, still called THE EMPRESS.

I remember our training ship the BAY STATE was berthed at the Miami passenger terminal in Jan. or Feb. 1972. I was standing gangway watch at the time and remember watching the big cruise ship in ahead of us getting ready to sail. There was a big tent rigged on the dock and a band playing. She was the MARDI GRAS (old EMPRESS of CANADA). After she un-berthed, I watched head down the ship channel. I saw allot of smoke from the stack and she sheered to stbd. and went aground. Even with about 5 tugs they couldn't get her off. I think all the passengers had to be taken back ashore, believe it was her maiden voyage for Carnival Lines. Don't recall how long she stayed there, but I wish now I had taken some pictures!
Regards,
Paul
