Photo Category: Training Ships
First of three views of the SUNY training ship EMPIRE STATE as shown while underway on the St.Lawrence River off Verchères on December 24, 1989. She was converted at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, from the Moore-McCormack cargo ship MORMACTIDE which had been towed there in November 1988.
I could see her smoke before I saw the actual ship!
Quite a sight to behold!

Thanks Chris. She was quite a sight. SUNY wanted her out of the Lakes before winter freeze up although her conversion wasn't completed.

If I remember she was laying a smoke screen that day, they were looking for more funding to operate the ship and take her south for the winter, can't say that I blame them.

You said it right, this photo is worth of beholding! It´s so unusual to see that kind of real smoking since many decades. Thanks Marc for sharing this too. 8-)
