Description:

Anyone know which ship this is ?

I think she is scrapping in Turkey. The slide is relatively recent.
She is I suspect a USN Fletcher class ship possibly one of those trasnferred to Turkey. May be D340 Istabul or D341 Izmir ?
Any help and suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the ideas. I don't have a date on the slide - but it is not an old slide.

The second painted out number looks like a 5 and the one before could be a 6 or an 8, although it looks marginally more like an 8. The date of the scrapping in 1997 of SFENDONI is probably the age of the slide too.

Thanks
Douglas.

More info.
According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_destroyer_Nearchos_%28D65%29
D-65 NEARCHOES was scrapped in 1991.

In addition as hads been stated, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_destroyer_Sfendoni_%28D85%29 states that D-85 was scrapped in 1997 at Aliaga, and I would think that this seals it. It must be D-85 SFENDONI.

I'm late to this party and the mystery is already solved, but since everyone was concentrating on the Hull Number, nobody mentioned another fact:

When the Nearchos was in German service, her bridge was heavily modified/rebuilt, as were the rest of the German Fletchers.

The bridge on this ship was unmodified, thus eliminating any ex-German Fletcher.

This is an easy process of elimination:

The Fletcher is a round-bridge model.

This limits the possibilities to:

A/T Kimon D-42 ex-Ringgold ex-Zerstörer-2 Scrapped 1993

A/T Nearchos D-65 ex-Wadsworth ex-Zerstörer-3 Scrapped 1991

A/T Sfendoni D-85 ex-Aulick* Scrapped 1997 in Turkey

Zerstörer-4 D-171 (never renamed) ex-Claxton scrapped 1992

Zerstörer-5 D-179 (never renamed) ex-Dyson scrapped 1993

Both Greece and German used amidships hull numbers. But clearly it's a 2-digit number, which eliminated the German ships.

The last digit appears to be "5," which leaves A/T Nearchos and A/T Sfendoni.

Photos of Zerstörer-3 clearly show that its bridge was converted to an enclosed square-type.

On the other hand, photos of A/T Sfendoni at the end of its service still show the round bridge. It's A/T Sfendoni, without doubt.

More likely the former Greece SFENDONI (as such in Jane's Fighting Ships) or SPHENDONI (as such in Combat Fleets of the World) (ex USS Aulick, DD569) as her penn. no. was 85 and it looks like the last figure of the short (painted out) penn. no. is a 5). During the nineties she was used by the navy of Greece as a pierside training ship. Scrapped 1997 Aliaga, Turkey.

Sorry Marc didn't see you answer, was busy typing, but NEARCHOS was not a Fletcher type destroyer but a former Charles F Adams class destroyer and the one one the photo is for sure a Fletcher class destroyer.

Oops on this one, Bram.
NEARCHOS (D-65) was indeed a Fletcher, the former WADSWORTH (DD-516) which next became Z-3 (Federal German Navy) in 1959 and then NEARCHOS in 1980.
But as you mentioned, the destroyer could also be SFENDONI (85).
The next NEARCHOS (219) was a Charles F. Adams DDG transfered in 1992 and sunk as a target in 2006.

Marc you are so right, I forgot all about the former German one, if we know where the NEARCHOS was scrapped (we know the SFENDONI was scrapped in Aliaga) or the date of the photo, it will be easier to identify this vessel.

Looks more like a former Hellenic Navy Fletcher because of the position of the painted over pennant number under the bridge. The Turkish Fletchers had theirs painted on the bow with a D pennant.
My guess would be NEARCHOS as the second digit looks like 5 and hers was 65.
Photo was probably taken at Aliaga, Turkey.

Cheers,

Marc
