Yes these type of spots are few and far between.There is a favorite spot of mine like this below the Iroquois Lock off a road which follows the River.At a little park between Iroquois and Morrisburg.The ships are real close here and there is quite a strong current in the River at this point.The ships have to make about 3 or 4 turns in the river in a spane of about 5kil.Anyone taking shots at the Iroquois Lock needs to check it out.Looks like I gave away a good viewing spot.If you go to Morrisburg and follow the road around by the golf course it will take you along this area.Eventually you will come to the park across from a large barn.

Thanks for the info -- much appreciated -- did not know about that park. Have found a few places upriver from Iroquois where they come fairly close. Not a close angle but a really nice shot is a park at Iroquois by the golf course on a beach as the upbound ships approach the locks -- need a tele for really good shots. Don't know if I will make it to Iroquois Lock this summer but will keep this location you suggested in mind. Thanks!!!
