Description:

Inbound to AIS steel works jetty Kwinana WA, 2/9/1979
Built 1977. 25854grt. Whyalla SB & Eng. Co. Ltd. (BHP's own shipyard) for BHP Shipping. Sister ship was IRON CURTIS. At the time of their construction BHP had caught the gas turbine bug and applied this form of propulsion power to these bulkers and to some smaller Ro-Ro ships. As far as the CARPENTARIA & CURTIS were concerned, it wasn't very successful, and both ships were re-engined with 4-stroke Wartsila diesels in 1984.

Iron Carpentaria was sold sometime last year. I don't have much detail on who to. I remember Bluescope Steel (BHP Billiton) told the MUA the vessel would be replaced but that never eventuated.
