Description:

Inbound to the Australian Iron & Steel Co. steel works jetty Kwinana WA, 11/2/1979
Launched 31/3/1953, completed 6/1954. 10305grt.
The Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP) used to be an Australian corporate icon. These days it is a multi-national firm called bhpbilliton (that's right, no capitals or spaces!) In the mid-1940s BHP established its own shipyard at Whyalla in South Australia, and many of the ships built there were for BHP's transport division. IRON WHYALLA and her sister IRON SPENCER were two such vessels, which spent their careers carting raw commodities and steel products around the Australian coast.

Hi Ted

Very nice shots again. At Napier we are indebted to BHP for resuming a transtasman connection to Australia after Union Co. abandoned their service here. Though was a bit late for the Iron Whyalla but we did see quite a few of their later steel carriers. Look forward to more postings.

Cheers

Brent
