This was one of the Military Sealift Command's mysterious fleet of "Special Project Ships". She began as one of over 500 Victory-class cargo ships built during WW-II, the SS Kingsport Victory. In 1961 she was converted into a specialized satellite communications ship, I believe the fist ever built. Later, she served as a survey ship, and was finally laid up in 1984.

During the second half of the 1970s, when I was sailed for MSC, the Kingsport was a very unpopular assignment, not because of the ship herself but because of her captain, who had a bad reputation was a notorious martinet. I recall that those who had been working around MSC for any length of time used to try to avoid getting assigned a berth on the Kingsport if at all possible.

Just like to point out this image is back to front. It shows the vessel during one of her visits to Falmouth, and is seen alongside the County Wharf.
