I was a 10 year old sailing on the Cleopatra from New York to Beirut. The captain wanted to bring us in for a close look and came in much too close. We hit the Rock going about 10 knots I'd say a reversing the engines had no effect or were unable to be engaged in time.
The ship hit the rock with a large bang and listed to the side slightly. We were stuck in Gibraltar for 11 or so days until transferred to a British ship to complete our journey. The Cleopatra had about 70-80 passengers on board at the time plus crew. The ship stayed on the rock almost the entire time until dragged off of the rock by a tug. A very embarassing experience.
The accident happened in broad daylight, I'd say mid-day in clear calm conditions. Weather was not a factor.

She is the former Victory Ship Cleopatra (IMO: 5075945).

She was built in 1944 at Portland, Oregon, as the first Victory Ship, UNITED VICTORY. She was sold in 1947 to Khedivial Mail and renamed KHEDIVE ISMAIL, then sold to United Arab Maritime and renamed CLEOPATRA. SHe was driven aground for unknown reasons on June 6th, 1960, but was later salvaged. She met her end in 1981, being scrapped at Gadani Beach.
