"This information is in regard to some of the comments regarding Armando de Peralta. Mr. de Peralta was not Cuban. He was born in New Orleans to an Argentine father -- his obituary can be found at https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/nytimes/name/armando-de-peralta-obituary?id=28653238 Those remembering meeting a Cuban while the ship was in port, may be thinking of Mariano Echevarria. Mariano fled the Castro regime and settled in Washington, DC where at one time he was treasurer of Peralta Shipping Agency, Inc. He did meet the ship in port at least one time. His obituary is at https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/arlington-va/mariano-echevarria-11682103"

While I worked on the ship, we had a lot of trouble with the cranes. We noticed that a large roller bearing had fallen and cracked on the wharf in Japan and had been welded. So the crane always juddered when turning. Some of gear wheels were welded or fixed to the shaft with a nail.

I sailed this beautiful ship as Radio Officer during 1970 and 1971. Cargo of paper rolls from St. Regis Paper co. Jacksonville, FLA USA to west Europe and from Europe to USA cargoes of very special cars (Rolls, Ferraris and that sort of cars).
The ship was provided with top of technology for the time. Two radars, one of them with secondary technology, One of the more powerful transmitters of the oceans. Flume stabilization System. By that time, the captain was british, deck and engine officers and cook were Dutch and Radio Officer and rest of the crew were spaniard.
