Would be pre-Falklands 1982 as she emerged with Cunard funnel and grey hull for a short time after that.

The picture was taken between 1972 and her refit in Bayonne in 1977 where QE2 had two extra penthouses installed forward of the existing penthouses that were added in 1972 during a refit in Southampton

Yes, I should have noticed that..... I see the vacant space there. I think that was the only work she ever had carried out in the US. The scheme to add another deck over the bridge at her re-engining thankfully never came to anything but it pales into insignificance when one reads what is to be done in Dubai! :-o

There was NEVER any plans to go over her bridge in the German refit, extra penthouse suites were added behind those that were already there between the funnel. This area was origionally the crew sundeck and was very much missed afterwards.

I was there during the big German refit of 86/87, the extra penthouses were already prefabricated on the quay side when we arrrived in Bremerhaven on 28th October 1986.

The best part of that refit was watching the funnel being removed and placed on the quay, had an opportunity to walk under it and look right up, was quite unreal, at least I know what QE2 looks like without the funnel, not nice at all. Also down into the dry dock and going under the hull, at least I can say I have touched the keel of QE2.

All the best

Sean 'Southampton'
