A veteran of Dunkirk, the 212gt steam tug CHALLENGE was built in 1931 by Alexander Hall,Aberdeen for the Elliot Steam Tug Co,London.Lloyds register No.54844.On May 31st,1940 she sailed to Dunkirk to help berth vessels in the harbour and the following day she towed small craft back across the channel. In 1941 she worked on the erection of Maunsell AA towers in the Thames Estuary and for this work she was fitted with a flying bridge to accomodate an Oerlikon cannon and a forebridge for two Lewis guns.In 1944 she towed various parts of the Mulberry Harbours and on July 3rd she was damaged by a V1 in the Royal Albert Dock and repaired at Rotherhite.Sold in 1950 to Ship Towage Co,London and in 1969 to London Tugs Ltd. She was disposed of in 1973 and was a week away from being broken up when Taylor Woodrow aquired her for preservation. She was moved to St.Katherine's Dock by Tower Bridge where I photographed her in 1975.She was restored by the Dunkirk Little Ships Restoration Trust between 1993/2003 at Tilbury and Southampton and in 2005 steamed to Dunkirk under the command of Sir Robin Knox Johnson for the 65th anniversary of the evacuation. In 2006 she was due a refit of her engine and it was found to be beyond economical repair and the decision was made to install a new engine.Work is ongoing at present and in March 2011 the old engine was stripped and ready to remove the crankshaft.
