Wubbo Ockels, innovator in the field of sustainability and co-director of Ecolutions BV has dedicated himself after his space shuttle flight in 1985 to realize many of his innovative ideas in the project Ecolution.Ecolution is based on the design of a 77-foot schooner type boat by naval architect Gerard Dijkstra. They provided all necessary drawings and calculations. Building will take place under Lloyds-and-CE certification.

The strong hull is built of steel for impact resistance while an epoxy treatment assures low maintenance. A displacement of about 65 tons will give a great feeling of comfort during sailing. Her sail plan and rigging is a so-called Aerorig. The masts are made of carbon. Ecolution carries about 13 tons of batteries in her cargo which replaces the traditional led ballast. The keel is a swing-keel specially designed for Ecolution. The shape is like a wing about 5.5 meters long when fully extended. Fully retracted the depth of the vessel will be 1.90 meter. The final major underwater piece are two rudders, which are located at the far aft of the ship. Each rudder has a skeg on a partial piece that does not move, for added strength. The strength is such that Ecolution can stand on her rudders and keel when falling dry.
