I always thought Shaw Savill's Southern Cross was an original design, but looking at Al Djezair, possibly the design came from her.

Frtrfred: no, it's not a conversion, she was built this way. She was just very advanced for her time.
Chris: I tend to agree. After her sale to Sovereign Cruises, she never sailed even mile again under her own power, as her engines were completely knackered (probably owing to the fact that the engines had been salvaged from the previous EL DJEZAIR of 1934!). Sovereign sold her on to Chandris, but couldn't make it work either. Hence, she finally sold for scrap in 1973.

Looking at her paintwork, this was probably taken in 1970 after her sale and she possibly is heading for Piraeus for final fitting out.
