I understand (i.e. have read) that QE2 was painted light-grey in order to bring her in line with the NAL ships (Sagafjord and Vistafjord) that were to be her fleetmates 1983-onwards.

I agree though that both QE2 and Vistafjord (in her Caronia days) looked splendid in dark-grey/black.

QE2's original slim funnel looks like a futuristic piece of sculpture in this pic, yet somehow I feel that the later, buffed-up funnel better suites her size.

The IMO is correct as she was Built in 1969, you are thinking of the new one maybe.

Dear Roger

Her hull was painted Black when built and returned to this in I think 1984 as she had this colour hull on her next visit to NZ in 1985. She grey in 1981.

Guys, whatever it is,,she looks miles better than any of the new square boxes which they use nowadays to carry "tourist,s" over the seven seas. Those things are not even close to ships anymore.

As I know this is her first paint scheme, but as "gray" colours shows the action of sea (rust, corrosion, etc) they change her paint scheme to black hull (more economy?) and to Falklands operations she received a chopper upper deck that I cannot see in this photo, correct?
In my opinion, this is most beautiful QE2 paint scheme! =)

I cannot understand why Mr DOT (whose views are so often similar to mine) should think that the Queen Elizabeth 2 looked better as a motorship. Whilst in the photo above her grey hull colour looks very shabby being so rust streaked, the ship does still retain, largely, her original and elegant profile. Yes, the forward lounge has gone and there are those dreadful balcony cabins up top but later there were even more of those. Her funnel here is still the original one that is in total harmony with the signal mast above the bridge and the graceful aft decks with those distinctive curving screens are also still intact. No Mr DOT, despite the shabby hull, here the QE2 (not QEII) looks miles better than in her later years. In my opinion anyway.

She looked terrible in this livery, maybe she was painted grey, just in case the Falklands War started again, or the RN did a deal when she was overhauled after service as a troopship with Cunard.

Great classic shot of QE11 in earlier phase, she looked much better in later years as a motorship! mrdot.
