Rotterdam

Seven Seas behind her

This was my real bonus for a trip to Rotterdam, I saw her in 9/1979.

Built 1938 for Anchor Line as Passenger Cargo Liner
Service during WW2 as armed merchant cruiser HMS Cilicia
1966 sold for use a stevedoring training hulk at Rotterdam and renamed Jan Backx.
1980 renamed Cilicia for final tow to breakers yard at Bilbao where she arrived 14/8/1980

Seven Seas - IMO 5532120

Built 1940 as C3 cargo liner Mormacmail
shortly before completion sold to USN and converted to Auxiliary Aircraft carrier USS Long Island
1946 released from service and sold in 1947 for breaking up
1949 rebuilt as passenger ship and renamed Nelly
on Bremerhaven - Melbourne service
1953 refitted for North Atlantic service renamed Seven Seas
1960 visited NZ on a cruise
18/7/1965 serious fire in Atlantic
1966 repairs complete 6/1966 but sold 9/1966 for use as accommodation ship as seen above at Rotterdam
1977 broken up at Ghent arrived 4/5/1977

This is a very familiar picture. Both ships used for student accomodation - Jan Backx a trainingship for the 'havenvakschool'. Spent many hours on these ships during my time at the maritime school. German tourists asking what time the ship would sail and find myself first time seasick on the Seven Seas after too much beer and french fries.
