A New Zealand boat long-lining for toothfish in the Southern Ocean was last night in strife off Australia's Macquarie Island.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported the vessel, Janas, had blown a head gasket and its crew were racing to try and repair it in increasingly difficult seas.
Janas, chartered by New Zealand Longline - a Nelson-based 50:50 joint venture between Sealord and Talley's, is believed to have 21 people aboard.
The crew of the Australian Antarctic supply vessel Aururoa Australis had gone to the aid of the New Zealand boat.
Aurora Australis voyage leader Rob Bryson told The Australian that they were trying to tow the ship to shelter at the sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island before bad weather arrived later today.
They had yet to establish a tow line to the vessel.
Toothfish is one of the most lucrative catches in the world but has also seen a number of ships suffer damage or sinking in the Southern Ocean.
