Description:

The Amphibious Assault Ship USS Iwo Jima (LPH-2) is seen here visiting Liverpool's Brocklebank Dock, 19th October 1980.

Commissioned in 1961, this vessel saw service in the Cuban missile blockade 1962, Vietnam and Operation Desert Storm. It was also the vessel that picked up the crew from the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission in April 1970.

10 crew members were killed aboard her due to a boiler accident in the run up to Desert Storm in 1990. She was decommissioned in 1993 and scrapped in 1995.
