Back in 82 i was with my grandfather on a small palletcarrier named Bremer Makler, we sailed from Norway to Bremen/Bremerhafen and back, i was on a holiday with him, and we saw her at Bremerhafen. A sight i'll never forget!

Not quite, Clive,
As FRANCE she was laid up in Le Havre from 1974 to 1979. In that time she was sold twice: first to Saudi interests who left her laid up in Le Havre, then finally to Knut Kloster, who had her towed to Bremerhaven for conversion to the cruise ship NORWAY. Her first cruise from Miami was in June 1980 and she served for two years before returning to Lloyd Werft, Bremerhaven for removal of half her power plant so as to reduce her running costs. That is when I, in 1982, as a technical shipping journalist, visited her.

So that would have been when she was being refitted for service as Norway after her several years of inactivity at Le Havre.

In 1982 I visited NORWAY in Bremerhaven while she was having boilers, turbines and two of her original four propellers removed. Although a beautiful ship in the passenger accommodation and public areas, down below in the machinery spaces, stores and crew accommodation she was in a very sad state, looking much older than the 21 years that she then was. Unless she was improved later, I don't think many passengers would have been impressed by what they saw had they been allowed down there.

Still, she was magnificent! Happy to have cruised on her.

Mike, 20 additional years of service? Not even 15 I think. The extra cabins were added in 1990/91 and she was withdrawn from service in 2003.

Clive I agree, but remember, those extra cabins also gave her an extra 20 odd years of service, and 20 odd years of enjoyment for us ship nuts.

It is sad to see how top-heavy this once elegant ship looked with all that top deck addition. I sailed on her in her early days as Norway, when she was still graceful.
