Description:
The passenger-cargo vessel Leicestershire about to depart Port Said homeward bound. The last passenger ship built for Bibby Line she and her sister Warwickshire were also the first single screw and first steamers for the company for 49 and 27 years respectively. She had accommodation for 76 first class passengers and a dwt of 9614 tons. This photo was taken in 1964 and it may have been her last voyage for Bibby as she wazs sold that year to Typaldos Brothers and converted into a ro-ro ferry and renamed Heraklion in 1965. On 8 December 1966 she capsized and sank with the loss of 217 lives after a lorry smashed through a side door in bad weather en route Canea - Piraeus. This tragedy lead to the bankriptcy of Typaldos Line.
