Description:

AMERICAN SHIPPER, a C2-S-AJ5 type built at Wilmington NC in 1945, was photographed at New Orleans. AMERICAN SHIPPER traded for U.S.Lines from 1945 to 1968 when she was renamed TRANSOCEANIC FREEDOM, then in 1970 BENEFINA as which she foundered in the Balintang Channel, 400 miles south east of Hong Kong, on 21.12.74 during a voyage from Port Hedland to Keelung with a cargo of salt

I liked the masts of the ships of the United States Lines painted silver. I do not know of any other shipping company doing the same. Like the silver hulls of the small freighters of Oldenburg Portugiesische D.R., Hamburg, they looked to nice.

I was 13 years old lad living in Port Hedland with my family at the time when SS BENEFINA foundered. Our family had actually planned on sailing aboard this ship during her ill fated voyage. We were lucky! Like all C2s, she was a classic ship of that class. John W

The C2s were a real work horse, and brought the huge amount of relief cargo to Europe from the U.S. following WW-II. Very easy for some Europeans today to forget about the relief and rebuilding help that the U.S. did in those days.
