I also saw them used between ships that are in layup and are lashed together like the Maersk ships (5 in total) that were laid up in Loch Striven.

Those big fenders and called "YOKOS" in short or in long YOKOHAMA Fenders, such fenders are mainly used in the fishing industry to off load their catch at the high seas or anchorages to reefer vessel. I did that once when I sailed reefer vessels. Nowadays often used also in lightering actions,,like a big tanker pumps a certain tonnage off in order to "lighter" the vessel to the draft to enter the port.
