Hi Jim,
Just to put a few things straight. Two people survived the tragedy, the captain and I (2nd officer). The ship was in ballast, no locomotives. We were on our way from Algiers to Toronto to pick up a 2nd load of diesel-electric locomotives. We had finished our first of 3 trips with locomotives for Algiers. The Gabriella sank alongside in Port Kembla and killed another two people, surveyors, not crew this time. She was re-floated and scuttled a few miles out of Port Kembla.

Cheers,

Piet

Thanks for posting Chris,
...sends a shiver up my spine. I was newly at sea in 1976 when the Gabriella was towed in to St John's Newfoundland and tied up beside the ship I was on. The crew had had abandoned in a liferaft...all were lost if I remember correctly. The load of locomotives had shifted causing an extreme list, however, the cargo was restowed and secured and a new crew took the vessel on its way.

This past August I piloted the Jumbo Spirit, the Captain of which had been a Cadet on the Gabriella, and he filled me in on the ship's ultimate fait. I haven't thought of the ship much over the last 35 years and twice in 2 months kit has come up.

cheers
Jim
