Hi,
On 12/05/1942 ,on the Cockerill shipyard at Antwerpen, were 2 ships under construction number 682 and 683 for the polish Zegluga Polska who were Lewant II and Lewant III.
Number 682 LEWANT II launched end 1942 as GUSTAV NACHTIGAL and number 683 LEWANT III as HERMANN VON WISSMANN. In 1943
they went to KIEL to be armed and end 1943 in service as Schnellbootbegeleitschiffe. GUSTAV NACHTIGAL sunk 14/06/1944. HERMANN VON WISSMANN was in the 5 th Schnellbootgeschwader in the Baltic Sea and Norway where
she was found in mai 1945 unmanned when The ROYAL NAVY under tow brought to FLENSBURG and later to KIEL under the name HMS ROYAL HAROLD where she was used as a transit station. In 1950 the 683 ex LEWANT III ex HERMANN VON WISSMANN ex HMS ROYAL HAROLD the ship went back to BELGIUM

Hi Allan
In Erich Gröner book "Die Deutsche Kriegschiffe ..." vol. 4 is information that Lewant II recived name Gustav Nachtigal but was completed later than Lewant III which recived name Hermann von Wissman.

It would seem indeed it is Newcastle as the Newcastle warehousing is written on two buildings above stern of vessel

I remember her coming to Montréal on an official visit to Expo67. I don't think I have ever seen a Belgian naval vessel up our way since then.

Hi there

the Polska Fundacja Morska website suggest it was the Lewant II which ultimately became the Kamina, and the Lewant III the Gustav Nachtigal lost a month after completion.

Which is correct ?
