I'm not certain but on close inspection of this photo the Hung Jiang is tied up alongside a bother ship. I think this is the 31,000 ton bulk carrier Johanna Oldendorf. They are tied up alongside the old J.L .Thompsons North Sands quay.( now the site of the national glass centre and part of the University of Sunderland ). The Oldendorf ships were also built at A&P southwick yard. We tendered for the order and British shipbuilders ,our own company tendered against us to build them in other British yards. Thankfully Oldendorf stated that due to long association with A&P the ships had to be built by A&P or they would take the order to be built in Poland. At this news British Shipbuilders backed out and we won the order. Oldendorf won a great deal of gratitude from the men at A& P and British shipbuilders lost all it's credibility with the workforce , who had been described as a thorn in the side of British shipbuilders because they were the best paid and most productive yard in the group.Asan aside the Oldendorf were superb ships with bulbous ice-breaker bows and were beautifully equipped and finished in the accom decks.has anyone out there got any idea what happened to her or how she finished her days (names / dates) .I would love to here what became of her because she was a great ship to work on and a great looker when completed. The owners model of her can still be seen in Sunderland Central museum. Take a look and see what great ships we used to build at Austin and Pickersgill Sunderland .thanks for posting Frankie Mc.
