The conversion of these two ships was both remarkable and striking. The Ellerman 'City' ships had, regrettably come to the end of their useful lives. It was fortunate that two were so successfully rebuilt and continued to sail for many years.

I am most surprised that MrDOT hasn't been on to tell us what a mess Michael Karageorgis made of Ellerman's old CITY OF YORK.
This is not an altogether bad-looking ferry but, compared to what it looked like before . . . . !

Hi Ralph,

If you send the info to Rodger at Miramar I am sure he will be grateful.

Maybe so, but "beached at Patras" is simply wrong, as Patras is quite far from Eleusis. Should read "beached at Eleusis".

Ralph

I think in context of Mirimar their details are correct, as under disposal data no mention is made of lay ups of ships.

Noticed some errors in my first comment, so here is the corrected version:
"beached at Patras" is not correct, she had been laid up at Eleusis for several years already when she capsized there.
I looked through a lot of old messages on several newsgroups of which I am a member, and what really happened is this:
She sprang a leak and had to be beached at Eleusis on 26/11/'02. Efforts to keep her afloat were to no avail and she capsized a few days later.

The wreck is still there at Petrola, on the coast of Eleusis bay:
