I just posted on the Kees Heemskerk photo: This Turkey expedition now slightly more clarified. Asbestos removal indeed! This ship is historically very important to the USA yet they allowed it to be raped & pillaged thousands of miles away?? Is that what happened?
Whatever the cost of asbestos removal, surely it would have been worth the extra mile or whatever to ensure preservation of the original?
Or is it ok to dupe future visitors with a facsimile?
The USA needs all the history it can get. This was a fiasco on a grand scale. There are sufficient companies in the US that could have done this work...(Safely)..the cost would have been cheaper...surely?

This bear echoes of the 'Adelaide', being removed from the UK & taken to Adelaide, Australia....a nonsense venture in my view.
Just Google the ridiculous story. You'll be amazed how much money can be wasted on ship preservation.....or cheap attempts to "cement ties".

(Sorry Paul, that's all I know on the United States story.)

The ship was towed to Turkey for asbestos removal since doing so in the US would have cost a fortune. When she was towed to Philadelphia in July, 1996, more than just the asbestos was gone.
