Description:

The nuclear powered freight ship SAVANNAH was launched by the United States in 1962. She displaced 22,000 tons and with a 20,300 hp propulsion system she was designed to carry 8500 tons of cargo, 60 passengers and 124 crew. Her top speed was 23 knots and with a cruising speed of 21 knots she could travel 331,00 miles on a single refueling. She was a technical success, but her low cargo capacity and high manning scale caused her operation to be uneconomical. Ship was photographed at the Hudson River piers in New York City circa 1963.

Nice photo. Thanks for posting. Saw her once, in person, in Galveston Texas back in 1969 or 70. I was 11 at the time. Impressive to see.
