In October 1958 it completed the modernization work. Then he installed fuel oil burners was achieved with greater economy and something more than velocidad.Encontrándose "La Palma" in the port of Arrecife on 16 March 1976 suffered a serious breakdown in one of its boilers. The next day arrived in Las Palmas. Since at that time and was scheduled for decommissioning next and taking into account the high cost of having to repair the boiler, finished tied to the dock in Las Palmas, waiting for what is decided about their future.

On November 12 was purchased at public auction for the amount of one and half million pesetas for Jürgen Flick that intended to become a museum, yacht club and casino and restaurant afloat, as has been done in foreign ports in similar cases , by the way, with great success.

The idea, though good, ran into the bureaucracy and misunderstanding. Obstacles, impediments, objections ... from each and every one of the bodies should approve the project ended the patience of Mr. Flick.
On December 6, 1982 City Council unanimously agreed to Las Palmas boat purchase Flick to make it public cultural center, and to this end a committee was formed. This operation never realizó.Finalmente, March 13, 1986 and Tamaran trailer entered the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife correíllo the much discussed. Since then remains in dry dock waiting, waiting ...
Ten years later, finally a glimmer of hope: in 1996, created the Correillo LA PALMA, incorporated within the Canary Association of Merchant Navy Captains, and composed of a series of lovers of the history of this ship , in order to preserve the vessel to its possible dismantling or sinking.

Since this Commission was promoted in May 1997, the visit of a technical team of "The Maritime Trust," who drove at the time the restoration of historic vessels like the Discovery, the Victory and the Cutty Sark, among others. The expert opinion issued by "The Maritime Trust" was a great endorsement for Correillo LA PALMA: "The ship is in perfect condition for restoration. The best solution is the ship sailing. "

In December 1997 he formed the Association for Restoration and Conservation Correillo LA PALMA with the firm determination and commitment not only raising funds for restoration, but to convince the authorities of the need to enable this piece of Memory Historical Islands, for which a campaign promoted awareness, attracting new members (today should be around a thousand), collected signatures, and clear evidence of popular support through both private and public entities.

In 1999, he was the School-Workshop Steam La Palma, under the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife and ICFEM (Canary Islands Institute of Training and Employment), under the direction of D. Federico Padron, undertook the first restoration work by more than thirty young people in training in three different specialties (editor enabler, welded structure and installer plumber mechano-tuberosum), which the old Correillo be exploited as a classroom teaching.

Thanks to these impulses, November 29, 2002, the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, owner of Correillo, decreed the establishment of the Canary Foundation Correillo LA PALMA, by the Association for Restoration and Conservation Correillo LA PALMA. This established a nonprofit foundation for purposes of general interest to basically carry out the restoration of Correillo, respecting its original purpose and having it sail again, returning to sea, if possible, with its original steam engine. It aims to collaborate with schools and the school becomes Correillo practices for students, especially the School of Navigation, Naval Radio Electronics Machines and the University of La Laguna, and Nautical Training Center- Fisheries and Hospitality.

In 2003 he joined the Association, the City Council of El Hierro and gained the support of La Palma, La Gomera and Fuerteventura, which came to be an important support in the demonstration that this was in old Correillo really very important for all islands.

Notably, the Technical Director for the rehabilitation of La Palma, D. Jose Serrano Camacho was a student of machines in another famous Correíllos, the VIERA AND CLAVIJO between October 1965 and April 1966, ensuring his extensive knowledge of the ship's bowels.
Finally, the first major restoration work of the old and worn Correillo could be initiated in November 2004.
