Hi Zelda, nice photo of the Marianne in AKL. I didn't realise there was still a trade in second hand cars in New Zealand, I remember years ago they used to import second hand cars from Japan. Is this still the case or are they outbound cars for the Soviet far east market?
Kind regards.....Bill Burton...Hobart

Hello Bill, Thank you for your kind words.
Last month there over 12,000 imported used cars bought into NZ Mostly from Japan. It is not unusual to see car carriers like Planet Ace being unloaded and truck after truck taking the cars away from the port.
I do not know the figures for outgoing cars, but am sure there are some very knowledgeable people on this site who could tell us.
It made a change seeing cars hanging from a derrick being handled one by one.

Hi there Bill and Zelda,

Marianne is on long term contract to Kyokuyo Shipping of Tokyo.
I worked for KY's agent Beacon shipping for 7yrs.

We used to regularly bring cars south, about 15 ships per year, and then proceed to load reefer cargo outbound from southern ports.
In my 7yrs, we only lost (wrote off) one car.
However there was a general perception (incorrect), that RoRo's incurred less damage than convetional ships. so we don't see them very often now.
Zelda, glad you got this one, I missed her, I beleive she is here to load squash from Napier/Gisborne.
I saw Marianne last week, she was on her last KY meat run to Philadelphia. That service, along with Lauritsens USWC service, has ended after 15years.

Rgds/Mike Cornwall.

Correction,

KY's last meat ship was the Washington, not Marianne.
