After a storm, the Greek bulk carrier Rio Grande aground on the beach at Wassenaar. January 16, the SL 123 assisted in the salvage of the Rio Grande (Comninos Brothers Shipping, Piraeus). On the first attempt, the ship turned and 60 meters out to sea but pulled one had to stop in connection with the bad weather. 5 days later the Storm was weakened and the NL 123, NL 117 and Iceland make another attempt and succeeded to the Rio Grande afloat. While pulling on the tugs broke 4 drag wires because there is no chain could be used for walking and also because the Rio Grande with shock was released each time causing large drag forces on the wires came. The SL 123 dragged her to Verolme Botlek. Rijkswaterstaat paid 850,000 guilders for the Smit salvage what was just cover costs. |
