Tankers built before 1970 | | Description: | Built by Sir J.Laing at Sunderland in 1956 for S.H.Smith-Sorensen of Arendal, Norway, the tanker O.B.SORENSEN was photographed off Hoek van Holland on 4th July 1970 inbound for the oil terminal at Europoort, in the early stages of development on the opposite bank of the Nieuwe Waterweg. She was just about to be overtaken by the Finnish ARAGUAYA inbound for Rotterdam.
O.S. SORENSEN was sold east in 1974 and renamed CHERRY DUKE as which, on 26th August 1979, she sadly suffered an explosion and fire with the loss of five lives during a voyage in ballast from Karachi to Jebel Dhanna. |
