Here you see a picture taken form the mv Tempera in ice on here way to Primorks. She is passing the Natura. In ice condition vessel Tempera is sailing backwards. The bridge has two steering positions. She can break ice with a maximum of 1 meter.

After much thinking I think it is because the propeller slices the ice up into smaller pieces making it harder to reform perhaps? But how much stress is that on a prop blade? How much damage can a blade take before it becomes inoperable/inefficient?

Why would she sail backwards? Is it because more disruption to the ice takes place ?
