After much thinking I think it is because the propeller slices the ice up into smaller pieces making it harder to reform perhaps? But how much stress is that on a prop blade? How much damage can a blade take before it becomes inoperable/inefficient?

Why would she sail backwards? Is it because more disruption to the ice takes place ?

Really a good photo, I just wonder where Y get it?
Perhaps from the server of M/t Tempera ?
