This was my first ship july 1967 to january 1968. I served as 2nd sparky. Chief sparky was Bill Dedman - a nice old guy who love a bottle of Johnny Walker often!

Like you say Gordy, I was impressed by the amenities on the Dampier (own showers etc) I had just come off the old 'Iron Derby', the contrast certainly opened your eye's.
Regards Tony.

Yep, right on Tony. I can remember my dad talking about her saying she was very classy as ships go during that time, all the mods and cons...I can understand what he meant, I had been on a string of chieftain class ships back then and the accom wasnt flash, joined the Iron Flinders and thought wow, It felt like I was on a tropical cruise ship lol

Hi Gordy, I see your family was familiar with this ship.
I joined her in Port Kembla and eventually paid off in Freemantle.
Regards Tony

My father was the first bosun on the Iron Dampier back in 1960. He picked her up new in Whyalla and stayed there for her initial voyages. My brother was on her also, I was on her sister the Iron Flinders the first built of the two explorer class vessels.
