August 1978. The Attican Unity, IMO 5163089, yob 1957, caught fire and was stranded in attempt to avoid sinking. she burned for weeks. After 8 weeks, she was pushed higher on the beach to stabilize her and to unload (a part of) her cargo. She carried chemicals which caused poisoned smoke several times.
I saw her a day before she stranded, i was alongside her aboard a pilotboat when she burned and went on my bike to watch her in Flushing Sloeharbour where she was for months. Note the deer in the funnel, something a 12 year old boy never forgets. rgds Stan Muller |
