Tasman Spirit was grounded at the Entrence of Karachi Harbor on 17th July 2003. Vessel was scheduled to enter port during afternoon high tide, but miss the tide. Despite Captain reluctance Pilot insist that he can still berth the vessel at OP-1.

Since water was low and the ship have more draft, it grounded on the sand just outside the entrance. Pilot in attempt to save himself ask Port to try pull the vessel out of sand, on Pilot request 5 tugs from Karachi Port Authorities were deployed along with 2 Navy tugs to pull her out but since she was laden with 67,000 tons of oil, all the manage after two days of pulling is to break her into two.

Later on more vessels were deployed for the clean up job, but Clifton beach still brave 30,000 M/tons of oil and remain inexcessable for 2 months.

Later on the ship was towed by the Smit in 2 pieces to Gadani where she was dismantaled.

Anyone wants to know more, please contact me, actually we were the handling agent for that vessel at the time.

After the oil spill, port authorities held Master and his crew responsible for the all the damages, and ask the owner (Polembros) to pay a hugh amount of USD 2 Billion (If I remember correctly) otherwise the crew will be prosecuted.

They kept all the crew from Tasman Spirit and from Salvage company (Smith) for long time. Released the crew after 3 months keeping Master for 2 more months.

He was in soo bad shape that he consider sucide to get rid of all the hardship he was going through. Later on KPT release him on the Gurantee of the owner.

Not only they were detained, Karachi Port Authority asked for 2Billion (if I remember correctly) in damages.

In their attempt to milk out something from Polembros & Smit they even detained Smit people and after lengthy arguments they released others keeping the Master of Tasman Spirit in detaintion for so long (5 months I think) that he (according to my information) tries to kill himself.
