Her accommodation looks too sixty-ish for a 1983 ship.

The GRIMALDI LINES have within the past 14 years built a series (let's say: 8 abt, as far as I know) of large combined ships; container carriers/car carriers for the service North Europe to West Africa.
These ships also have their forward part used for containers transport and the aft 'building' is used for cars transport (no livestock).
(for an example, pls see GRANDE AFRICA)

I have a friend that was a cadet on matson boats, and he said they even took animals across

That stern is not a live-stock carrier (Matson doesn't do that sort of thing) but a vehicle and trailer carrier. This ship was converted from a full-container ship into a hibrid part-container-part-RO-RO carrier. These ships weren't exactly lookers when they were first commissioned by APL in the early 1980s as full-container ships but, now that Matson gotten through with them, they've become real eye-sores. I suppose Matson is making money with them, though.
