Description:

The photo was taken on January 28, 1992 at the US Naval Station, Roosevelt Roads in Puerto Rico. Most likely by the markings and where the ship was located, it was probably going to expended as a target. The ship was probably washed up on the beach by a passing hurricane the previous season.

My Dad served on this ship from commission to decommission during and after WWII. We had assumed she was scrapped long before 1992

This is a Haskell class APA, in fact this is former USS Brookings (APA-140). She had been in the James River Reserve Fleet from 10/6/58 till 11/16/87 when she was returned to the Navy to be used for non-destructive target practice. Hurricane Hugo blew her onshore in September 1989. Attempts were made to pull her off, but she defied them and a contract was issued in April 1992 to Resolve Marine Group to dismantle her in-situ.
