A terrible accident, 32 crewmember died in that fire,
due to a locked firedoor. It took 42 hours to extinguish
the fire.

No, we could see the fire from our summer home off Bowser, south of Cambell River in the Strait of Georgia! was a compact little cruise ship. mrdot.

It was not in Alaska where she caught fire, nor did she run aground. It happened just north of Vancouver Canada in Strait of Georgia between Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland. Several crew members died in the fire.

There is an account of the fire and subsequent salvage of the Meteor by the tug Sudbury II in the book "High Seas High Risk, The story of the Sudburys" by Pat Westell Norris, from Harbour Publishing. I remember the story well because I grew on the BC.coast.

Between 1955 - 58 she sailed as "Hurtigruten" when needed.
Nice to see her again.
