Tannenberg first struck a mine with their foreship but remained afloat and was taken in tow by two R-boats when another mine hit the stern. Tannenberg capsized and sank at 7.58 p.m., July 9th, 1941. 10 of her crew were lost, in all 20 men died on all three ships, the remainder were rescued by R-boats.
