This ship,

I met in Suez, and while we thought we were the fastest ship in the convoy (Concordia Builder - 20 konots)this one, the Red Jacket, went one puff and disappeared in the horizon, beautiful ship indeed...

I was aboard the Red Jacket when this was taken. It was early in the career with American Export Isbrandtsen Lines, it still had the Intermodel wheel on the stack, we called it the "Roto Rotor". The four ships, Red Jacket, Defiance, Great Republic and Young America never technically "Export" ships, they operated under the subsidiary of Mediterranean Marine Lines due to having deck officers from the MMP and engineers from MEBA, Export was all BMO. I sailed on three of them for ten years, they were good ships.

This ship was subsequently sold to U.S. Lines and re-named American Rapid, then re-sold to Central Gulf Lines and re-named Rapid. Later she was transferred to the Maritime Commission. I believe she is still part of MARAD's Reserve Fleet, under the name Cape Nome.

One of four combination breakbulk/container/ro-ro ships built for Moore-McCormack in 1969. All four sold to American Export Lines in 1970, then became Farrell Lines ships in 1978, two to United States Lines in 1982, the other two to naval auxiliaries in 1986.

The other three:
