Description:

This photograph was given to my late father in law by a matelot from the Kimberley when she was involved in Red Sea convoys in late 1941. Prior to her moving to the Red Sea the Kimberley was involved in the first Battle of Narvik in April 1940,when a whole squadron of German destroyers were either sunk or put out of action. She then headed for the Med.where she played major roles in the evacuation of troops from Greece and Crete. Kimberley completed her war service patrolling the Greek Islands and on May 8th,1945 accepted the surrender of the German garrison on Rhodes, later evacuating the 117 Germans to Alexandria. She then set sail for Devonport where she was decommissioned, eventually being sold for scrap on March 30th, 1949. HMS Kimberley was a K class destroyer built by Thornycroft (Southampton UK) and launched in Jan 1938 and commissioned on Dec 21st,1939.

Nice old photograph from yesteryear, assume her pennant number at that time would have been G50 and was changed to F50 postwar :-D

Hello Jim, from my records and checking with a website specialising in WW2 RN destroyers, I am certain that HMS Kimberley carried the pennant No.F50. She definitely did from 1941 as I have a photo of her in 1941. She was decommissioned in 1946 as F50 and I have tried a search to find a G50 but to no avail.
Regards,
Lee
