Hi Rick. Thanx for comment. Well, I bet the crew in a lifeboat was advised to hold monkey lines tight:) I'm not sure, but the motor, lifting the lifeboat back to it's position, could have been pneumatic. It takes ages to get back to the top:)Cheers Matt

Mat, interesting to see this shot of the ship in a very light ballasted condition, and the length of the lifeboat falls (the wires from the davits) which I estimate at 25 to 30 meters. In all but the calmest weather, it would have been very difficult, and dangerous, to re-connect the lifeboat to the heavy hooks on the ends of the falls. Even though it appears calm weather, at sea level you can see there is a small sea swell. When in the lifeboat, and being winched back up to boat deck level by a slow electric motor, it could be quite unnerving!
