I think this was one built strictly for scientific purposes, Fergal. I prefer the one in your photo, she's much more charming with her periscope!:-)

Paul, I found a photo of an even smaller vessel with a Flettner Rotor

:-) Much interesting & something very special on this site, an LNG Ferry (!!) - Hybrid powered Ferry (!!) ... and altogether this LNG hybrid powered ferry also looks as a very nice ferry ... for a ferry!
Dеnis on Nov 01, 2012 12:21 (8 years ago)
There's a concept of LNG ferry with 2 Flettner rotors:

Denis, absolutely thank you ... oops what a great mistakeee I have makeee!

Indeed, it's the 'Magnus Effect' and the German engineer Anton Flettner was the first to build a ship which attempted to use the benefit of the Magnus Effect.

I was yet confused, maybe of the morning hours!?

I didn't expect to see this technology applied to smaller vessels, but I guess why not. With 30-40% reduction in fuel consumption I suppose this born again technology is going to be in the ranks with all that is to come from the "green" era.
Dеnis on Nov 01, 2012 11:24 (8 years ago)
Jadran, it's called the "MAGNUS effect". Go back to school!
jadran on Nov 01, 2012 11:08 (8 years ago)
You are very right Denis, in your re-confirmation statement.
It is clearly seen on the enlarged photo, that the white cylinder is connected to a shaft which is turning/rotating the 'Flettner Unit', causing the 'Flettner Effect' for moving the vessel in perpendicular direction in respect of the direction of the blowing wind!
Dеnis on Nov 01, 2012 10:00 (8 years ago)
It IS the Flettner rotor.
Fergal Clohessy on Nov 01, 2012 08:42 (8 years ago)
Hi Victor.. I thought of that but I dont know what other category? and I dont know if she will never fish again! maybe she will!
Jens it is a sail of some sort but not sure if it could be called a flettner
victor radio74 on Nov 01, 2012 08:35 (8 years ago)
Interesting photo, but maybe wrong category. It seems she WAS a fishing vessel
Jens Boldt on Nov 01, 2012 04:34 (8 years ago)
Now, to be serious, this is a Flettner rotor, right?
Jens Boldt on Nov 01, 2012 04:25 (8 years ago)
I really welcome this environmental and animal friendly approach to fishing:
No gruesome death in a net, the fish is simply laughing itself to death! Cool...:-)

Humble start to big business? :D
Fergal Clohessy on Oct 31, 2012 19:35 (8 years ago)
my understanding when I spoke to him was that this was part of a business idea/plan and this was a prototype for that :)
Dеnis on Oct 31, 2012 17:52 (8 years ago)
Perhaps the owner decided to save on fuel so he would have more money to restore the boat?
Dеnis on Oct 31, 2012 16:44 (8 years ago)
Haha nice one! :D
Looks like the rotor is made out of paper?
