In 1988 the disappearance of the Patanella triggered on of Australia's modern maritime mysteries.

The Patanella left Fremantle Western Australia to journey Airlie Beach Queensland. Last contact was made with the yacth on November 8 1988 when the craft was 10 nautical miles off Sydney. The yacht then disappeared without trace. Many months later a single life preserver was recovered. This discovery only increased speculation as to the fate of this vessel as tests on the preserver found that marine growth on the item did not match the timeline of the disappearance
