What do lightbulbs have to do with anything?

The whole light bulb thing is a ruse to hide profits to GE & Phillips. CFL's cost a fraction of what an incandescent bulb does to produce. The power companys raise the cost of a kw/hr.= no savings. The global population is'nt going to pay to properly dispose of them, and it's win-win for the chinese to keep building more crappy products. The ships they build are probably just as poor quality as everything else they produce.

Hi Patagualino!
I adore historic vessels and i feel sad when they are scrapped. For that reason i can empathize with what you feel about scrapping such beautiful ships. Those vessels might have well been of way better quality than contemporary constructions. I even know that certain ship types like e.g. container vessels lost much steelweight in their design over the past decades.
BUT, in my opinion the replacement of lightbulbs through energy saving bulbs is a total different cup of tea.

Looking at this, and the previous photos....given the harsh environment this ship worked in....they must have been so well-made to survive those 68 years...amazing. A testament to quality: Nothing made on this scale to-day will survive any where near this duration.
You make rubbish. You reap the rewards. Short term profit.
They just don't get it: The scrap in this ship is just as valuable as a ship made 10 years ago.
Correction: WE don't get it. We get all wound up about "carbon Foot-Prints" & such nonsense and allow ourselves to believe that it's our OUR light bulbs, LIGHT BULBS that are causing all this "Global Warming".....Not....NOT Mammoth constructions like ships that are "disposable" within a ten year life span.....involving huge amounts of energy to construct....NO! Nothing to do with that at all!

We allow ourselves to believe that "Energy Saving" light bulbs are a good thing, whilst ignoring the amount of toxic material that goes into each & every one of them. That will damage the earth for hundreds of years or more....."But look at the energy saved" RUBBISH. It costs far more energy to make them: They are full of toxins...(In the transistors used)(And the fluro tube coatings: Extremely toxic)
and....when we, as 'concerned people' we use less electricity......They will put the price up ANYWAY....!

You just cannot win. As normal human beings on this planet: We cannot win. We will never be allowed to.

When you work out why....Be sure to let me know.

Take another look at the "hulk" above: It looks immaculate, does it not? Read again this comment.
