Built as Clan Ross and along with Clan Robertson one of the penultimate pair of steamers for 'Clan Line Steamers'.
The ultimate pair were the sisters 'Argyllshire' and 'Ayrshire' which were built for the Australian trade.

Clan Ross and Clan Robertson were built when Clan Line and Union-Castle were rivals in the South African trade and were designed for an express trade - with 12 first class passengers - from Liverpool to Durban.
Sadly the Clan Line takeover of Union-Castle made them redundant in that trade and being rather fuel thirsty ... 50 tons a day at 15 knots... they found themselves under the South African flag.
Clan Ross found her way back to B&C as 'Kinnaird Castle'... a Union-Castle 'black boat' .. ie general cargo.. with no passengers.
She had the first 'integrated' set of officers in the group... U-C master, 2/0 and 3/0, Clan Line C/O and engineers.....
